I am extremely giddy to be seeing not just one, but TWO of my singing muses this week....Jenny Lewis and Dolly Parton. Both of these women are not only amazing singers and songwriters in their own rights, but are also emblematic of the kind of strong, talented, inspiring women that CAVENESS stands for. Not excluding my men (you know I love y'all!), but as a woman in the music business, it is especially important to give it up for these women who have been making it happen even before it was easier to do so (and, I'd argue, women in the music business still have A LOT to wade through).
I want to share one of my favorite Jenny Lewis songs from her debut solo record, Rabbit Fur Coat, that she is touring in celebration & support of for it's Tenth Anniversary! This song is called "Happy" and it is gorgeous and simple and yet so evocative; and it makes me wax poetic about how she was the frontwoman/indie darling of a 2000's band out of LA called Rilo Kiley, when she stepped out of the shadow and into the moonlight of her own personal creativity and drive, and went on to build an empire of female badassery and a successful solo career.
A quick reminder to always be actively refilling your own inspiration wells, with artists that spark the fires you need to have sparked, and not waiting around for the spark to find you.
